The Hatchling—Plot Synopses

1995

I. Candlemas - The Discovery
Spring bulbs are appearing but there are darkening clouds throughout the Land of Lothloriën. The Users (the right wing of the Politicos Party who tend to be fundamentalist Kristos) are in power and have little care for preserving Mother Earth. Arnica and Holly, the main characters, celebrate their Candlemas Ritual at the Stone Circle in the wood where they find a magickal egg. They can hear the heartbeat inside of it. Arnica learns that this is a Unicolt, sired by the Unicorn Andrius, and that it must be kept safely in the Stone Circle until Eostara. That night Holly has a dream about an earthquake.

II. Eostara - The Earthquake
Arnica and Holly have been tending the Stone Circle and watching over the Unicolt egg. The temperatures are unseasonably warm, and the first trillium bursts forth. The magickal Unicolt egg has grown and its once faint heart beat is now a healthy pulsing. During the night Arnica and Holly are awakened by a earthquake and, while their cabin suffers minuscule breakage, they are filled with apprehension and hurry back to the Stone Circle to check on the egg. They are devastated to see the shell cracked as they fear it has been damaged by the earthquake. As they wonder what to do the egg cracks again and the Unicolt is hatched. Arnica carries the hatchling to the cabin.

III. Beltane - The May Horn
The gardens are alive with new growth. Arnica works in the gardens in preparation for the evening's Ritual. Arnica and the unifilly, nicknamed Munchkin, develop a link of intuition. The Beltane Ritual in the Garden Circle is attended by Arnica and Holly, Phoenix and Pearl, Amethyst and Crystal, the Munchkin and, unexpectedly, Andrius. After the Maypole ribbons have been woven by all the attendees, Andrius crowns his daughter as the MayHorn with a crown braided of flowers. We learn through conversation that the Users want to make all religions illegal unless they accept the Book of Doom.

IV. Midsummer - A Midsummer Night's Dream
It is Midsummer. Although still young chronologically, the unifilly is showing signs of maturity. The gardens are growing, but there are no signs of any of the usually abundant borage plants. Arnica and Holly make a visit to Jewel and her newly born son Dagon, and honor his birth by hanging a silver bell in the grove. Jewel in turn shares some of her borage babies with the two Master Gardeners. While walking through the town on their way to visit the new mom and baby, Arnica and Holly notice that many Earthkin have sold their properties due to growing ecological and economic pressure from the Politicos, and have moved to the mountains. Upon returning home, Arnica and Holly find the gardens to be filled with borage. They spend time enjoying the frolics of the unifilly and each other. Midsummer Ritual, held outside in the Stone Circle, proves to be very magickal indeed as a portal into the underworld opens in the great tree. They sleep in the Circle with dreams of the faerie.

As Arnica and Holly ready to take their tithe into Merrydale, they wonder how they will manage to carry it into the village. Together they work magick to render invisible the Hatchling's horn, so she can make the journey with them. Successful in their magick, they venture into town with the help of the Hatchling who carries the tithe. The village is unusually crowded and chaotic but they manage to make it in and out of the village quickly, thanks to the help of a new friend, young Gino. VII. Hallow - Depths of Darkness
The first frost has changed the leaves of the sweet gums and other trees to a rainbow of bright golds, reds and oranges. The hatchling, very wise and precocious for her five sabbats, has fun dancing through and jumping into the pile of leaves Arnica and Holly have raked into a large pile for her. Ritual is to be worked by Arnica and Holly alone as all the other coven members are unable to join. The Hatchling helps with the preparations by making many trips from the cabin to the Stone Circle carrying in her baskets ritual tools and candles for the ritual. As Arnica and Holly pause before entering the temple, Arnica feels a chill. Together Arnica and Holly raise energy to a dramatic level as the hatchling watches in anticipation. As the two men call out to "lost loved ones from within, to join us on this night," the Goddess Herself appears to the Hatchling to explain Her winter descent into the Underworld.

As the Hatchling mourns, the Goddess says: "Remember, little Hatchling, you hold the promise. The nights grow dark and death will be prowling the land but you are my Dark Star. I will be with you at Spring."

Although Arnica and Holly cannot see the Goddess they feel Her presence as She speaks directly to their hearts.

After Ritual worked by just the three, Arnica, Holly set to making mulled cider and wine. With a glass to celebrate the season, the men relax in front of the cabin fireplace. Morning arrives with a knock at the door waking Arnica and Holly to the bright rays of the Sun. IX. Candlemas - A Feast of Candles
Arnica and Holly make a shopping list for their trip into Merrydale. The invisibility elixir is achieving its purpose of hiding Dark Star's horn, making it possible for the two men to take her along on their trip to the village. An especially bad flu season is upon them resulting with two deaths in Merrydale and three in nearby Mill City. Those using the tonic, containing blessed herbs from the gardens, have not experienced even a cold. Garden bulbs are up early this year and Holly is hoping there won't be a late freeze. Although Dark Star likes the walk into town, often playing hide-n-seek, she does not like being tied to a post, like a common horse, in front of the apothecary, but she fully understands the danger if she were found to be a unicorn. In Merrydale Arnica and Holly run into young Gino who offers to help them carry their parcels back to the cabin. Arnica and Holly invite Gino to participate in the evening's Candlemas Ritual and to spend the night at their cabin.

Before leaving town the four friends encounter Pastor Dolorum, a priest of the Church of the Martyr. The priest is a favorite of the Users and often quotes from the Book of Doom. Unexpectedly, the priest asks Arnica and Holly to bless something of his mother's during their rites and to secretly return it to him. "We are not all the same," the priest says.

Gino's first Ritual this Candlemas was indeed a magickal one. Candles for many were blessed and a sacred spring appeared to the West of the Stone Circle where they all revived themselves in its magickal waters.
